Why hydration is crucial for seniors

Water makes up over 60% of the human body, making hydration essential for maintaining proper organ function, regulating body temperature, delivering nutrients to cells, preventing infections, and keeping joints lubricated. Hydration is particularly crucial for seniors due to age-related changes like reduced body water content and increased fluid loss.

For optimal health, senior men should aim to drink about 2,500 mL (10 cups) of water daily, while senior women should target 2,000 mL (8 cups) per day.

Dehydration occurs when fluid intake falls short of fluid loss. Symptoms of dehydration can include fatigue, dizziness, confusion, dark urine, mobility issues, and dry mouth, lips, or eyes.

To ensure adequate hydration, try incorporating drinking water throughout the day. Since seniors may find it challenging to drink a full cup at once, it helps to have a beverage with each meal and keep a drink nearby at all times. Setting reminders or alarms can also be useful.

While water is the best choice for hydration due to its purity and absence of additives, other options include juice, milk, tea, or coffee. Be cautious with juices and smoothies, as they can be high in sugar, and remember that caffeinated drinks may have a diuretic effect. Additionally, incorporating water-rich foods like cucumbers, watermelon, tomatoes, grapes, bell peppers, and oranges can help maintain hydration.
