Foods to eat after surgery

Every year, approximately 234 million surgeries are performed worldwide. There are many reasons for having surgery, some of which include making or confirming a diagnosis, implanting devices, redirecting blood vessels, and repairing or repositioning organs or tissues. Whatever the reason, it can cause trauma to the body.

One of the things to help make a smooth transition from the hospital to home is your diet.

Below is a list of 7 foods to eat after surgery.

1. Berries. They contain lots of vitamin C, which stimulates the production of collagen, the most abundant protein in the human body, leading to wound healing. Since berries are rich in antioxidants, they provide anti-inflammatory, immune-supporting, and antiviral effects.

2. Eggs. They are vital for a speedy recovery since they contain protein, vitamins A, E, and K, calcium, zinc, iron, and nutrients that support wound healing and immune health.

3. Dark leafy greens. They help with blood clotting, improve energy levels, enhance immune function, and decrease inflammation.

4. Yogurt. It is common to receive antibiotics during or after surgery. Although they prevent and treat infection, they can disrupt the balance of bacteria in the gut. Yogurt contains probiotics that can restore this.

5. Whole grains. They contain lots of fiber, which can help treat or avoid constipation, and nutrients that help the body fight infection and promote healing.

6. Lean proteins. Proteins are composed of amino acids that can help regenerate tissue after surgery and promote collagen production, which protects the skin.

7. Sweet potatoes. Carbohydrates provide energy to cells of the body that are required for healing. Sweet potatoes are rich in vitamins, minerals, and anti-inflammatory plant compounds that help the body recover and optimize immune response.
