September is Arthritis Awareness Month. With that in mind, this blog is going to focus on arthritis, which is inflammation or swelling of the joints. Although there are over 100 different types, the most common symptoms include stiffness and joint pain.
Arthritis is most common in people with other chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Since experts don’t know the causes of arthritis, it cannot be cured. However, treatments such as medication and physical therapy can help manage symptoms.
Diagnosis involves a combination of diagnostic imaging techniques, taking a medical history, and a physical examination.
There are both controllable and uncontrollable risk factors for arthritis. Maintaining a healthy weight, performing exercises for your joints, and not smoking can prevent controllable risk factors. Uncontrollable risk factors include inherited traits, age, and gender.
Arthritis is more common in women and the risk tends to increase with age. The symptoms associated with arthritis can be mitigated by staying physically active, speaking with your doctor if you notice any pain in your joints, and learning self-management skills which can help you feel more in control of your health and well-being.
