Tips for improving brain health in seniors

Many seniors are familiar with the saying “use it or lose it,” which emphasizes the importance of regularly engaging in and practicing skills to prevent losing them. As we age, both mental and physical abilities can decline.

The brain is one of the most vital organs in the body, making it essential to take good care of it as we get older. A recent study found that nearly 750,000 Canadians experience cognitive impairment, affecting their ability to think clearly, remember, and learn.

To enhance your brain health, consider incorporating the following tips into your daily routine:

1. Stay active. Regular exercise helps maintain and improve strength, boosts energy levels, and elevates mood. Research indicates that physical activity can increase brain size, which is crucial for learning and memory.

2. Eat a balanced diet. Consuming green, leafy vegetables, fatty fish, berries, and walnuts is associated with improved brain function. Consider trying the Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds while limiting added sugars, processed meats, and refined grains. This diet is linked to a reduced risk of cognitive impairment and slower cognitive decline.

3. Prioritize sleep. Adequate sleep is essential for brain health. Seniors should aim for 7 to 8 hours of restful sleep each night in a quiet, dark, and cool environment.

4. Engage in memory games. Activities that challenge the brain can enhance both short-term and long-term memory.

5. Maintain social connections. Staying connected with family and friends helps reduce the risk of dementia and depression. If in-person meetings are not possible, use online platforms like FaceTime, Zoom, or Skype to stay in touch.

6. Manage stress. While some stress is natural, managing it effectively is beneficial for brain health. Aim to stay positive and set aside time each day for relaxation.

7. Get enough vitamin C. As an antioxidant, vitamin C helps combat free radicals in the body. Foods rich in vitamin C include citrus fruits, broccoli, potatoes, peppers, and tomatoes.
