The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that about 85% of seniors experience at least one chronic health issue, while 60% face two or more. Despite the increase in average life expectancy, it remains crucial for seniors to take an active role in managing their health to enhance their quality of life.
Here are five common health concerns for seniors, along with tips for prevention:
1. Arthritis: Characterized by joint inflammation, arthritis may result from an immune system malfunction that causes the body to attack its own joint tissues. While some types are hereditary, you can reduce the risk by maintaining a healthy weight, stretching regularly, managing blood sugar levels, and following an anti-inflammatory diet.
2. Alzheimer’s disease: A progressive brain disorder, Alzheimer’s ranges from preclinical stages with no symptoms to severe stages where daily activities are significantly impacted. To help prevent Alzheimer’s, limit alcohol intake, eat a balanced diet, and engage in activities that stimulate your cognitive functions.
3. Heart disease: As the leading cause of death among seniors, heart disease, particularly coronary heart disease, occurs when the heart’s arteries cannot supply enough oxygenated blood. Prevention includes not smoking, controlling cholesterol levels, and exercising regularly.
4. Osteoporosis: This condition, which leads to fragile bones and increased fracture risk, is more common in women due to hormonal changes during menopause. To prevent osteoporosis, ensure adequate calcium intake (1,000 mg for senior males and 1,200 mg for senior females) to help build and maintain strong bones.
5. Diabetes: Affecting roughly one-third of seniors, diabetes occurs when the pancreas fails to release enough insulin, resulting in elevated blood sugar levels. Prevent diabetes by controlling blood pressure, staying active, and managing a healthy weight.
