Cancer is the leading cause of death in North America, affecting individuals of all ages. Most cancers begin from a single abnormal cell.
Breast cancer is a condition in which cells in the breast grow uncontrollably. It can spread to other parts of the body through the blood or lymphatic system. The two most common types of breast cancer are invasive ductal carcinoma, which accounts for about 80% of cases, and invasive lobular carcinoma, which makes up 10–15% of cases.
Risk factors for breast cancer include older age, a family history of the disease, genetic mutations, prior radiation treatment, lack of physical activity, and alcohol consumption.
Common symptoms of breast cancer include pain in the breast area, the presence of a new lump, and skin irritation. These symptoms should be evaluated by a doctor.
A mammogram, an X-ray of the breast, is the most effective test for detecting early signs of breast cancer. To lower your risk, it is advised to limit alcohol consumption (no more than one drink per day). In addition, engage in regular physical activity (150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week) and maintain a healthy weight. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a healthy weight is defined by a body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 24.9. BMI is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared.
